Popular Medicare Supplement Plans

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance plans help you bridge the gaps in Original Medicare. However, with many plans and many companies who sell them, it can be hard to know which policy is best for you.

Many beneficiaries and agents consider Plans G and N to be the best Medicare Supplement plans because they leave you with very little to pay out of pocket.

There are many similarities between Medigap Plan N and Plan G, but they are different. Manatee Insurance Solutions explains the similarities and differences so you can make an informed decision.

As a reminder, here is what Plans G and N cover:

How Are Plans G and N Similar?

  • Both cover the Medicare Part A deductible.
  • Both do NOT cover the Medicare Part B annual deductible.
  • Both cover skilled nursing facility/care, hospitalization, blood, foreign travel, and hospice care.
  • If you enroll in either plan during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or you have a guaranteed-issue right, you don’t have to answer any health questions.

What Is the Main Difference Between G and N?

Medigap Plan N offers the same benefits as Plan G except for the Part B excess charges. And, Plan N covers the Part B coinsurance or copayments, except for copays of up to $20 for some visits to the doctor, and up to $50 for visits to the ER (that don’t cause you to be admitted as an inpatient).

What Are Excess Charges?

Medicare excess charges fall under the doctor/outpatient part of Medicare, which is Part B. In most states, a doctor/medical provider has the option of charging up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount — called excess charges — that are billed directly to you unless you have a Medigap Plan (like G) that pays them for you.

So, how common are Part B excess charges? It will depend on your area of the country. These charges tend to be more common in urban or areas with higher costs of living, and occur more often when a patient visits a specialist.

If you see a doctor regularly and have one that charges excess charges, it may be beneficial to enroll in Medigap Plan G.
